Designing the Troll Mother was an exercise in balancing two seemingly opposite qualities: she needed to feel unmistakably like a troll, yet radiate the warmth, comfort, and protective nature of a mother. I wanted her to feel like someone her children could run to for a hug, even if her appearance might seem intimidating at first glance. Her features needed to retain that rough, fantastical troll character while softer shapes, expressive eyes, and subtle details helped bring out her nurturing personality. The real challenge was creating a motherly character without making her feel ordinary or losing what makes her a troll. Rather than relying on stereotypical maternal features, I focused on the feeling she could convey through her expression and overall design. She needed to feel strong enough to protect her family, gentle enough to comfort them, and believable as part of this imaginative world. The goal was to create a character whose warmth came through naturally, proving that even a creature with tusks, unusual features, and a formidable appearance can have a wonderfully tender heart.
